Pearls for Young Ladies

Blade Study presents a solo exhibition of Emma Safir as part of Simon Wu’s Curated Spotlight.

Safir’s artworks are labor-intensive. She begins by collaging photos–taken on digital and disposable cameras, 35mm, and slide film–which is then printed onto silk. The images are further manipulated using old-world textile techniques such as smocking and lace-making. Finally, Safir incorporates metal smelting and sculptural elements of pewter and aluminum, often drafted from gravestones and historic architecture. This results in painterly wall works, though they rarely incorporate traditional paint.
